What Rainmaker is designed to do

Rainmaker is a Doppler radar launch monitor built for practice, training, and simulator use. It delivers consistent, repeatable shot data across all clubs — giving you reliable feedback on ball speed, carry distance, launch angle, spin, and club path session after session.

It is not a studio-grade camera system like those used in professional fitting studios. If you're comparing Rainmaker to those systems, expect similar data for core metrics and some differences on metrics that cameras measure directly (like face angle), which radar derives from other measurements instead.

Most reliable metrics

These metrics are highly consistent on Rainmaker and suitable for making real decisions about your game:

Over multiple shots with the same club, you'll see consistent patterns that accurately reflect your actual distances and tendencies.

What affects accuracy

Setup is the biggest factor. Even a well-performing launch monitor produces unreliable data when it's not positioned correctly. For best results:

  • Position: 5 feet behind the ball, aligned directly down the target line, sitting level with the hitting surface.
  • Ball flight distance: At least 10 feet indoors, ideally 14+. Short flight distances reduce the amount of radar data available for spin and distance calculations.
  • Interference: Large metal objects, HVAC systems, or reflective surfaces near the unit can affect readings. Keep the area around the unit clear.
  • Club type: Ensure the correct club is selected in the Launch App. Club type influences how Rainmaker interprets the radar data.
  • Firmware: Keeping Rainmaker's firmware up to date ensures you have the latest accuracy improvements. Check Device Settings in the Launch App.

Radar vs. camera-based systems

Rainmaker uses Doppler radar, which measures the ball's movement through the air to derive data. Camera-based systems use high-speed photography to capture the club face and ball at impact. Each approach has strengths:

  • Radar excels at ball flight metrics — speed, carry, spin, and trajectory — and performs well outdoors and in variable lighting.
  • Camera systems can directly measure face angle and club face data at impact, which radar infers from ball flight and spin instead.

For most golfers focused on distance gapping, shot shape, spin trends, and simulator play, Rainmaker's radar-based data is more than sufficient and compares well to systems at higher price points.
